India's fisheries and aquaculture industry is an important sector of food production, providing nutritional security for food baskets, contributing to agricultural exports and engaging some 14 million people in various activities. Since independence, the country has had a wide range of resources from the deep sea to alpine lakes and accounted for more than 10 per cent of global biodiversity in terms of fish and shellfish species, and has shown sustained increases in fish production. The sector accounts for about 6.3 per cent of global fish production, 1.1 per cent of gross domestic product and 5.15 per cent of total agricultural output. Currently, total fish production is 10.1 million tonnes, with the inland sector contributing nearly 65 per cent and aquaculture fisheries contributing nearly 65 per cent. The annual production of carp is about 25 billion, the annual production of shrimp is about 12 billion, and in recent years has diversified. Along with food fish culture, ornamental fish culture and high value fish farming are gaining importance in the recent past.

Export potential

Fish and fish products are now the largest category of Indian agricultural exports, amounting to 10.5 billion tons, worth Rs. 334.42 million. This represents about 10 per cent of the country's total exports and nearly 20 per cent of agricultural exports. More than 50 different types of fish and shellfish are exported to 75 countries around the world.
